The law now requires that young people continue in education, employment (if it includes formal and approved training) or training until the age of 18.
Participation of young people in education, employment or training – Statutory Guidance 2013. (This law came into effect to enable all young people to have the opportunity to reach better outcomes, gain more skills, and therefore have greater earning potential.)
Parents are key to young peoples’ decision-making. We encourage parents and carers to use the information provided on these web pages with their children. We maintain regular communication with parents about careers events and opportunities via ParentMail, through discussions at parent evenings and at the annual careers fair. Parents are welcome to contact our independent careers adviser directly, and can request an individual appointment if needed.

In November 2024, the Gatsby Foundation updated it’s benchmarks to reflect changes in society and how the ‘best outcomes’ have been achieved.
The Benchmark Guidance used to relate to STEM subjects, the Criteria for Schools now reads as:
“Every year, in every subject, every pupil should have opportunities to learn how the knowledge and skills developed in that subject helps people to gain entry to, and be more effective workers within, a wide range of careers. Careers should form part of the school’s ongoing staff development programme for teachers and all staff who support pupils.”
-Giving students a “why” can be the real difference between a good lesson and a great lesson!
All teachers should link curriculum learning with careers and draw connections from their subject areas to different career paths.
